I was given a tarantula as a gift. I've never had one before so I am a total novice....I have a LOT of questions?

I have him in a 3 gallon terrarium with coconut fiber as substrate and a small hollow log as a hiding spot. I've read that their eating habits are a little sporadic and to offer crickets but if it's not eat right away remove it from the enclosure. My big question is water. How do I keep him hydrated? Everything I've found online is about keeping the crickets he eats hydrated.

Shallow water dish. Nothing smaller than its leg span. Do not put a sponge or cotton balls in it.

You will need to figure out the species. Some require more height, some more floor space, some need dry cages, some humid etc. You need to know what species it is to give it proper care. You can post pics on one of these forums and they should be able to tell you what it is

A small shallow dish with water in it. You will need to know what species of tarantyuala you have as different species have diferent temperature asnd humidity requirements. Getting the temperature and humidity right for the species you have is VERY important for keeping him alive. Id suggest getting an up to date care booklet and reading up on tartantuala care as there are are few things yoiu need to know abouty to keep tarantulas hap[py and healtrhy.
