When to do something about neighbor's loud music?
My neighbors' loud music (I live in a duplex) is audible through the wall connecting us. I need to do something about it because, even though it's a saturday, I have a ton of work to do (unfortunately). It seems like they're having some party, so I don't know if I want to awkwardly go knock on their door. But it's getting to be really annoying. Last night (same thing happened, but let it lie) I could hear the bass, this time I can actually hear the music and people talking. Thoughts/suggestions?

The huge problem with shared dwellings is they were built cheaply for the sole purpose for a landlord to rake in the monthly rent. The dwellings of this nature were not built with soundproofing in the walls, ceilings or floors; therefore every sound is heard throughout the building, as you are now well aware of.
I would knock on their door, right now or another time when the music/noise is loud and tell them you have something very important to say and then, while the noise is happening, invite them into your home so they can hear it for themselves. Perhaps this will make an impression and change their mind about the volume over in their space.
Otherwise, all you can do is live with it or complain to the landlord.
I have a neighbor who has outdoor speakers on his house. His taste in music is horrendous. So, I just set up my own music, not on a high volume, mind you.....just to drown out his noise.
His adult children pull their monster trucks inbetween our houses and their bass is so high that the dishes in my cupboards play a symphony of their own. It is horrible and I have just learned to live with it because there is nothing I can do. Apparently the noise ordinance in our town is ineffective as it reads that the noise has to be at an unreasonable level at an unreasonable time of day. So, loud music at noon is not an unreasonable time of day. They also play music past 11 pm outside, in the summertime, when our windows are open, but it is not at, what the town considers a high volume at that time. I cannot win.

although there is a time to do something, you need the landlord and without that take my advice and do not bother
