    You should have it appraised.

My hunting buddy - his grandpa brought a Luger back from the war, unfired, in a display case, with display ammo (sealed) and special presentation markings. The gun belonged to an Nazi officer grandpa killed in the officer's home while going door to door looking for Nazi's during the fall of Berlin. The gun was a presentation model given to the officer - along with the gun, case, ammo - he has a picture of officer, his military ID card, and written documents. It was appraised at $42,000

Grandpa also had a well used Luger, artillery model, with all matching serial numbers - it was appraised at $17,000.

There is a reason matching serial numbers are important. First - unless you had the 'eye' of someone or a close friend at Headquarters willing to do the paperwork for you - you could not bring a complete souvenir weapon home from WW2. So, the GI's would take dozens of guns and take them all apart - one guy would bring 40 barrels home, another guy 40 frames, another guy 40 bolts, etc etc with the idea they would all get together after the war - have a big party - and put the guns all back together. Some of those guys never made it to the party - so - the guns were built with a mish-mash of serial numbers.

Lugers came in many models. Some are more collectable than others. Some, are a heck of allot more collectable. You can visit www.amazon.com and drop several hundred $$ on reference books and educate yourself - or - you can have it appraised. Keep in mind - a legitimate appraiser will never, never, never make you an offer on a gun.......... if the guy makes any offer at all, or says it is worth $2500 and makes you can offer that is higher - run, do not walk - but run away.

My friends Lugers were appraised by a top gun appraiser on the West Coast, in the Seattle area. He said the presentation model gun was one of the top 20 guns he'd seen in his life. You should seek out a specialist like this.

A lot But what is a lot to me may not be a lot to you. They do make gun value books and if you don't want to spend the money for a book I am sure you can get the info on the internet. Punch in German Luger 1921 on your search engine Like Space Cowboy always say if we give you a value its only a guess I will give it a shot though anywhere from 350 which is what I would give you, up to maybe 700 what I would sell it for Twice as much if you had the hoister and three times if you had the belt. But this is just a guess and I really have no F en clue What is it worth to you? Hang on to it You can always use it for a paper weight or hammer

There are still some very nice working line German Shepherd Dogs, but yes, there has developed a split between working dogs and show dogs which is a shame, but after years of going in the wrong direction, I would say that the show dog lines are improving as well regarding health and temperament, and following the original breed standard, at least here in Europe. So, I think the GSD will come out alive and kicking, and as "Love is a..." said, many pro handlers just don't want to deal with Malinois. I know of experienced military dog handlers that went from GSD to Malinois and straight back to GSD again. It is not a dog for everyone. But speaking as an owner of the sibling to the Malinois, the Groenendael, I agree that what is happening to the working dog/protection breeds is going in the wrong direction. My first dog was a breed typical Tervueren, a working dog, but try to find one now and it is near impossible because the Tervueren and Groenendael in many lines, particularly the French, have been breed for beauty. From a theoretical point of view, one could also say that the Malinois working dogs are also being bred away from the breed standard, but in the opposite direction of the Groenendael and Tervueren, and of all the four varieties it is probably the Laeknois that matches the original breed standard the closest. I would love to see more focus on temperament and getting the Groenendael and Tervueren as a whole back to the working dog standard. They were not bred to be pretty, couch potato family dogs and the breeding in that direction is ruining them. I hate that I have to do such intensive research to find a good Groenendael or Tervueren, and to be honest, the dog I have now is too soft according to the breed standard. For the Malinois, if it were up to me, it would be split in two - a hard working line and a breed standard working line, but unfortunately I cannot swing a magic wand and make all breeders and show judges to what I want them to. For the Laekenois, well, maybe the fact that they are the least popular of the Belgian Shepherd Dogs is actually not such a negative thing for the breed after all.
