Whats the best way to select players for international levels?

I know the First Class= Tests

List A= ODI

T20=T20i

but is it safe to pick ODI players depending on their t20 stats?

or Selecting Test players seeing their ODI records?

    It used to be like this earlier, like you have specified but its gone haywire now.

    Especially in India T-20 players are getting picked up for ODI's, i.e. Yusuf Pathan & many more.

    They go bang bang in ODI's & succeed to an extent & then get found out by the opponents, as they have that limited talent, which shines once in a while.

    Situation isn't that bad presently, with the talent pool but it will be in the next 5-10 years, if T-20 & IPL survive. Indian cricket will go down the dumps, as talented cricketers, who make it to these leagues, won't want to stretch themselves. If they're minting money playing in the glamour leagues, why shed sweat & blood, when more money is coming their way, despite not even playing for the country.

    The best way is 1st class & List A cricket.

    Don't let very talented players go in IPL, let BCCI pay them handsome salaries, which they might, as their income will also nosedive, if Indian cricket suffers.

    Last couple of years Australia picked Doherty, Mxwell, Bailey, McKay, Henriques for Test matches based on their impressive limited overs stats and they could hardly do anything to justify their selection, now Mitchell Marsh has been picked despite having a first class batting avg of 28 and bowling a bit of part-time medium pace. There are rare exceptions like Gilchrist and Symonds but it seems like most of the time its a failed concept

    Team combination should be made by including 4-5 senior players and 6-7 players who are performing good at domestic level.Experience players are very important for making a good team.
