Questions about online schooling and home schooling?

I'm am English, currently living in America. We are considering getting me either home schooled or online schooled but I have just a few questions...

Obviously the school system is a lot different in the US to the UK. If I were to be home/online schooled, would I be able to be taught with the english system (GCSE, A level, etc) or would it have to be the American system? I don't know if this makes sense but it did in my head :D

Also, would I be able to pick my subjects like I would have in the UK? For example, if I were in school right now in the UK, I would be doing media as one of my chosen subjects for GCSE, would I be able to do this with home or online schooling?

Those are my main questions, but if you could tell me as much about home and online schooling as possible that would be great! Like the benefits of it or the drawbacks :)

Thank you very much!

There are several online British schools teaching (I)GCSE and A Levels. However, as far as I know, most are very reluctant to accept students living in the US because of the time differences. The British online schools usually have classes from 9.30am to 1pm. Depending where in the US you live, you'll have to be up and working via the web in the middle of the night for five nights a week. Anyway, if you want to look into it further, the reliable British online schools are:

    Cambridge, http://www.chsonline.org.uk/

    Inter HIgh, http://www.interhigh.co.uk/

    British E-school, http://www.briteschool.co.uk/

    First College, http://www.firstcollege.co.uk/

The other possibility that may work is North Star ( http://northstarworldwide.org/ ). They call themselves an "online learning community" as opposed to an "online school". They record all their lessons and you can watch them at the time of your choosing, so negating the 'time difference' issue. They are a Christian school though so I don't know if that would be acceptable to you or your parents.

There is no International GCSE in Media Studies so no, as a homeschooler, you would not be able to do that particular one. Cambridge do AS and A Level Media Studies, but no IGCSE.

You would be able to pick your subjects. I'm pretty sure that there are online schooling systems that offer the English system, as opposed to the grades that are the standard for the United States.

See what you can find with a web search! be careful, though: A friend of mine got burned by an online schooling scam.

    Good luck!

If you are taught with a US online school program, they would use the US system. You likely will be able to pick classes from those the program offers. Online school students are considered enrolled in the sponsoring school and must follow their rules, schedule, curriculum, and class selection.

With independent homeschooling, you would follow the state requirements of the state in which you are living. Your parents would pick your curriculum and classes based upon those requirements as well as your needs, interests, and learning style.
