Can an orthopaedic surgeon perform neurosurgery?

I have a condition called Spinal stenosis where the outlets from the spine have been narrowed either by growth of bone or cartilage tissue, and I have been referred to an orthopaedic surgeon. Does`nt seem to make much sense unless he is qualified to practice neurosurgery. I`d be grateful for any observations, thanks.

Both ortho and neuro surg do spine surgery. Brain surgery is only done by neuro and joint replacements are done by ortho.
