Hi. Can anybody tell me if it's normal for the front of a fireplace to be soot stained?

    Hi so have you checked the chimney as it sounds like it's blocked that is why you would get a blow back like that.

    Sweep the chimney. Maybe fit a taller pot to improve the draw. Also bear in mind that there has to be at least some fresh air admitted to the room to enable a proper draw.

    Good question, Dave, did you tell them that the front of the fireplace is either granite or marble and not brick or stone? Does that matter?

    no it means poisonous fumes are getting into the room not going up the chimney as the all should carbon monoxide is a killer your fire needs checking by a qualified engineer
