People in countries where English is not the first language:?

Are you more annoyed if a person from the US calls (at my job we do business to business type customer service) and just speaks English right away, or if they ask if you speak English? I ask because I usually ask if they speak English, and the answers (usually from European countries) range from a casual "of course" to a somewhat offended sounding "yes". (This is when they answer in their own language) Of course, there have been some that don't, when I call Central/South American countries.

It's changed over the years - I used to ask "May I speak English?" I thought it was polite but in the last 20 years all of that has changed. Everyone in business world speaks English - it's no longer a language belonging to a few countries - it's everybody's language.

Just speak it - it's expected - especially if you're calling Europe.

I've always started in English, slowly, with very clear diction. On rare occasion I might ask my listener, "Que nous parlions francais?" but because my French is really not that good, I really prefer to use English. I feel that my French pronunciation is probably offensive.

I would not have a high opinion of somebody if they didn't at least ask in one of the local official languages if I spoke English.

I personally wouldn't be annoyed by either scenario as long as they speak respectfully and politely. Not everybody speaks English.

I think you should ask, because assuming everybody speaks English is wrong. And some people might get offended by it.

If the expectation is that they will be receiving phone support in English, there should be no offense taken. If that is not the expectation, then the caller should ask, if they know how to.

Not really. English is the language the whole world pretty much runs on. Be it companies, restaurants, airlines
