Best way to communicate with someone who is deaf - lip reading vs writing.?
I work in a hospital - I admit people in the ER - and we have people that come in occasionally who are deaf.
What is the best way to ask them "Do you lipread or would you prefer to write out your needs?" or is there a better way to do this?
I toyed with the idea of learning basic ASL but it would be used so little that I'd be afraid I'd be worse off trying (ie messing it up) than to just ask about lipread/writing
Yeah, see, my question was not about which was easier. My question was about how to ask a person if they lip read or want to write things down.

Only about 30% of Enlish is visible on the lips so lireading is not very reliable. Better is pen and paper. But if the person uses a signed language then mandatory that an interpreter is called.
