  • Help a newbie to use the DC Metro?

I'm a small-town Midwesterner with zero experience using a Metro. I'm planning to stay in Vienna close to the Vienna/Fairfax Station. Most everything I plan to see is along the Orange line except Arlington (blue line?) and the Zoo (red line?)

Can I purchase the SmartCard AT the station or do I need to ahead of time?

Can I use the SmartCard to also pay for daily parking at the Station?

Are the signs/directions fairly straightforward for when I get off one line and need to get to the next color line? (Ie change Orange to Blue or whatever)

    THANK YOU!

  • Residential Home on Commercial Zone?

Several years ago when my credit was poor my parents bought my home with the intention that I would eventually buy it from them/take over the mortgage when my credit improved.

In the interim, several things lead to a decision to try to sell the house as a commercial property and so the zoning was changed to commercial.

That deal fell through and now I'm stuck with a house on a commercial zone - there's no chance of changing the zone back - and the bank is being particularly touchy about giving me a mortgage for a house on a commercial property.

My question is - if I wanted to buy the house, can I get a mortgage for a house on commercial zone without a lot of hooplah

    OR

Will this house be impossible to sell as a house because of it's zoning?

  • Suddenly, eating nuts makes me nauseous?

So I ve always enjoyed nuts but lately anything I eat with nuts in it makes me severely nauseous within minutes of eating the nuts - I never had this issue before. I just ate a mix of almonds, peanuts, and pistachios and now I m sitting here miserable. Last week it was a protein/granola bar with nuts in it. Anyone know what might be up with me?

  • Modem? Router? I'm so confused...?

So after several years of either having a roommate who had the internet account or having no internet at all I'm trying to get home internet service but as I've never actually had to deal with it, I'm getting confused.

I have no equipment so I know I need a modem (I'm buying not renting) but then I don't know if I need a router too? Do they come together? Can I buy them together?

I only have a laptop but I want to connect my game console, my phone, and my fire tablet to the internet also so I want to make sure I have what I need.

  • Old crib repurposed to a doggie bed - Will it hold the weight?

I have an old crib that was used by my mother when I w as a baby. I'm now 33. The crib is outdated and not safe for a child (the slat openings are too far apart). I put it back together and it's still very sturdy. The bottom can be adjusted to be used almost like a play-pen so I decided to remove the front part so it's three-sided and use it as a doggie bed for the German Shepherd coming next week.

My wonder is...can it support her weight. I mean, obviously a crib isn't supposed to fall apart but it's also only supposed to hold a baby and various baby-bed items. Can it support a fully-grown GSD? Does anyone know if cribs have "weight limits"?

  • Does anyone use BuyBuyBaby.com?

My brother and sister-in-law are having a baby and they registered on buybuybaby.com

I want to get some things from their list but I'm not paying their prices when I can find the EXACT same thing (brand and item) elsewhere for much less.

If I put things into a "Cart" on the site, will it remove them from the list so others will not buy them? I know if they get doubles they can return them (especially if I get gift receipts) -- but that's no fun.

  • Gift Basket Ideas for New Mom and Dad that isn t baby-related.?

So my brother and sister-in-law are expecting their first child - a boy - and of course I have a bajillion ideas for baby gifts.

What I d like to do is in addition to baby gifts I want to give them a "New Parent Pack" of stuff for them. But I m not good at coming up with ideas.

I m not rich so things like spa days, weekend trips, or super expensive gifts are out of the question. I also live too far away to babysit - and I m not particularly good with kids so I don t think I should be offering.

I was thinking like restaurant gift card, a bottle of wine (can breast feeding moms have wine?), and even some silly things like aspirin and ear plugs. I m just got getting the "idea mojo" going.

  • Saw a bird the other day while driving?

I saw this bird the other day while driving and I have never seen one like it before. I cannot find a picture like it and of course I was driving so I couldn t take a picture.

I live in Northwestern Illinois. The bird was large and brown/tan. It looked like a cross between a goose, a heron, and a giant flighted roadrunner.

It was long necked like a goose or heron - but had a beak that was like a heron s but shorter and was not colored like either. It ran before taking flight and it looked like it had feet similar to a roadrunners - not webbed but taloned.

  • Advice for someone considering older child adoption?

I am a single woman in my early thirties with an okay financial situation, a good job, my own home, and I live in a nice small town. I am considering the possibility of adopting a child out of foster care but I m a big planner and I want to make the right decision.

Is there any literature out there or great websites that can assist me with my questions? Obviously I can go to places like adoptuskids.org and the like but I really want to read up on the myths/facts, the process, the pros/cons, etc.

    Any suggestions?

  • Recieved a subpoena regarding a patient where I work - no clue what to do.?

So I work at a hospital - I am support staff, not nursing. I register patients. Today, I got a court summons/subpoena to appear regarding a case involving a patient -- sadly I ve got two issues with this.

Not only did this patient come about 4 months ago so I don t remember them at all

but also, this patient came by ambulance in the middle of the night - meaning I never saw the patient at all.

I have no clue what is expected of me and if I go and can only say "I have no information that can help you because I don t remember this patient" is that going to go over well?

  • Best way to communicate with someone who is deaf - lip reading vs writing.?

I work in a hospital - I admit people in the ER - and we have people that come in occasionally who are deaf.

What is the best way to ask them "Do you lipread or would you prefer to write out your needs?" or is there a better way to do this?

I toyed with the idea of learning basic ASL but it would be used so little that I'd be afraid I'd be worse off trying (ie messing it up) than to just ask about lipread/writing

  • Sims 3 launcher will not open.?

I recently updated my Sims 3 game. Now when I click on the icon to launch the game Origin will start but the actual Sims Launcher will not open.

It is not an issue with Norton as I do not have it. I cannot get it up open using the TSE file (or whatever it's called) and closing the processes has not worked. These were all suggestions I found while searching for a solution. I also tried to reinstall. Still no Launcher.

  • Car giving off Burnt Popcorn Smell?

I have a 2007 PT Cruiser with automatic transmission that recently has randomly been giving off a burnt popcorn smell. I notice it most when I have come to a stop and the car is running but it does not do it all the time.

I do not notice any smoke or noises from the engine. I recently got a new battery (2 months ago) and two new rear tires (1 month ago). I started noticing it about 2 weeks ago and it has happened 2-3 times.

I have tried to Google it and I came up with 1 option of a sticking brake caliper and another forum said an oil leak but the rest of the forum comments were just jokes about popcorn which were not helpful.

I DID notice about a week ago when I moved the car to use the snowblower that there was some yellowy spots in the snow under the car. No warning lights are coming on.

If you have a suggestion of what it could be, can you give me some idea of what it will cost to fix if I have to take it to a mechanic?

  • Seaworld All Day Dining Pass?

My mother and I are going to Seaworld Orlando in April and through AAA we can get tickets than include the All Day Dining Pass and I'm wondering if it is worth it? I mean, if we went and had and early lunch using it, we can use it again in the later afternoon?? It's an "all you can eat" sort of thing, right? I mean, either way we're going to get the Pass for about 10.00 vs the 30.00 on the Seaworld sight so I'm just looking for some feedback from someone who's used it.

BQ: I can't tell from the Seaworld site if the restaurants that participate in the Pass are buffet style or if you order an entree??

  • Is it easy to get transportation FROM Disney/EPCOT?

My mother and I are going to Orlando in April and one of our stops is going to be EPCOT. We shouldn't have much trouble getting to EPCOT - either the hotel will have something or we can take a cab or that Lynx bus in a pinch but what about getting back to the hotel FROM EPCOT. We're staying on International Drive.

We come from small town Midwest so hailing a cab isn't something we're used to (I've done it once in 30 years) and we don't want the hassle or expense of a rental car.

  • Help with Farm Up game - school?

I have the Farm Up game for Kindle Fire and I have built the school and started my first training session. Actually, I've completed my first training session and I don't know what to do next. The school was a light bulb over it but you can't click on the school or do anything. It just sits there. The training is completed (and it's been sitting with this flashing lightbulb over it for about 24 hours now). it's not the same light bulb that you get over the characters when they have new quests.

  • I paid a bill to collections, now another company is sending me bills like I never paid!?

    Here's the scoop:

I had a credit card that I let lapse due to poorness. After awhile, it went to collections, of course. I got one of those "pay in full yada yada" letters and by chance had gotten my tax return and used it to pay the stupid thing. This was to a company, I'm pretty sure, called Comenity Bank. I sent them a check for the whole bill with a note saying I expected a reciept saying I paid in full. I never got this reciept which did not make me happy but what was I gonna do?

Now I'm getting letters from ANOTHER company saying "you can pay half on this and we'll be square" from some place called Hudson.

I managed to search my old e-statements for my bank and sure enough there's my check #1104 for the full amount but, of course, it doesn't show who I wrote it to.

Do I have any recourse? I don't even know who to call. Will my bank be of any help since this was back in February and it's now September? Can Comenity help? I can't find anything on their website.

    Should I call Hudson first?

  • Black Actress/Singer - Help!?!?

Okay, so I'm trying desperately to remember the name of a black actress who could also sing (but never put out an album that I know of). Her face has been in my head for days and I cannot figure out her name or where I know her from. It's driving me nuts.

    Here's what I know.

    1. She is black.

    2. She was overweight and I think shorter. She had a round face.

    3. She has since passed away (I'm pretty sure)

    4. She was famous in the 60's, 70's or 80's or maybe all three.

    5. She had a very distinct voice. It was higher pitched I think.

    6. She may have been on Broadway

    7. She may have been in a sitcom

    8. She could sing but I'm pretty sure she didn't ever produce an album

I keep seeing her in a 60's type "housewife" dress and singing a song - possibly on a variety show or a special or something but I can't think of what it is.

It's not Della Reese. Everyone keeps saying it is but I KNOW it's not her I'm thinking of.

  • Plants that Repel Pests for Veggie Garden?

I am planting my first vegetable garden and have heard that it's good to plant certain things to repel bugs and such from your veggies but I'm not sure what the best choices are. I have heard marigolds are good and also catnip. I think the cats would love me if I grew fresh nip for them, so I'm leaning a bit toward it...or maybe both?

I'm going to grow just bush green beans, carrots, and I'm going to try trellised snap peas but I have heard some repeller plants work best with certain veggies. Any suggestions on what I should grow alongside my veggies?

    Thanks!

  • Need ideas for Shrubs/Front of House Foliage?

I have a house that needs some front of house excitement. We took out the huge, overgrown, half-dead UGLY-AS-HELL yew bushes and now have a void.

The front of the house faces North so I'd say partial sun in the front. My house windows sit about 6 feet above where the plants will go. I live in the Midwest.

    I would like something:

    **Easy to care for

** Looks pretty (I want a splash of color against my white house)

** doesn't get too huge and over grown (I realize you have to groom/prune your stuff but I don't want, say, huge mounds of hydrangea or viburnum that are going to take over like the last shrubs did)

I sort-of like Spirea but I don't know what kind to get. I DO find Butterfly bush, Bluebeard and maybe Potentilla pretty - are those good for my area?

NO ROSES please! I love them but they're just so much work.

    Help!
