Need ideas for Shrubs/Front of House Foliage?

I have a house that needs some front of house excitement. We took out the huge, overgrown, half-dead UGLY-AS-HELL yew bushes and now have a void.

The front of the house faces North so I'd say partial sun in the front. My house windows sit about 6 feet above where the plants will go. I live in the Midwest.

I would like something:

**Easy to care for

** Looks pretty (I want a splash of color against my white house)

** doesn't get too huge and over grown (I realize you have to groom/prune your stuff but I don't want, say, huge mounds of hydrangea or viburnum that are going to take over like the last shrubs did)

I sort-of like Spirea but I don't know what kind to get. I DO find Butterfly bush, Bluebeard and maybe Potentilla pretty - are those good for my area?

NO ROSES please! I love them but they're just so much work.

Help!

You have already listed some wonderful choices for plants. Be daring and confident in your choices.

The birds and butterfly's will thank you.

If your nursery carries it - then they will do good for your area. Ask your person at the nursery or garden shop for help they will help you, most have great websites, that they can check and tell you the pluses and minus for each. Another good mid level plant is Hosta. they come in a wide range of foliage, really are not a lot of work, and can set off your front space very nicely

Hope it works out well for you!

You don't say what zone you are in but if you are warmer then 5 you should look at cherry

Laurel or Camelias. They both do well on the north side and the Camelias have colorful blooms. Both are easy to prune to keep a manageable size and are pretty affordable. Don't go with spiraea or butterfly bushes because they both get out if hand quickly and can look raggy in just a few years. Besides, those (and Potentilla) like full sun in order to be thick and have flowers.

Take the babies right into a manner seperate room and positioned them in there staring at a action picture...try this whilst the toddler sleeps. pass upstairs and function a 30 minute term mutually and if the babies ask the place you went tell them which you labored out and for this reason they'd have heard some grunting, moaning and often something that sounded basically rather like cry/laughter. :) haha the issues we do for romance. :) ? happy anniversary?
