Plants that Repel Pests for Veggie Garden?

I am planting my first vegetable garden and have heard that it's good to plant certain things to repel bugs and such from your veggies but I'm not sure what the best choices are. I have heard marigolds are good and also catnip. I think the cats would love me if I grew fresh nip for them, so I'm leaning a bit toward it...or maybe both?

I'm going to grow just bush green beans, carrots, and I'm going to try trellised snap peas but I have heard some repeller plants work best with certain veggies. Any suggestions on what I should grow alongside my veggies?

Thanks!

Companion plants may be sacrificed to certain bugs but they don't do that much over all to repel bugs. Marigolds and calendula are 2 that may have some benefit. I do know that if there is a marigold around earwigs and slugs will eat it , but that doesn't mean it won't eat your veggies too.

You have to learn to identify the good bugs and kill off the bad bugs if you need to. Good bugs and birds do more to get rid of pests than any plant.

There are environmentally safe bug killers too that won't harm people but do kill the bugs eating your produce. For small or soft bodied insects insecticidal soap works. It is pure soap without any of the additives in our soap. Mix some up in a spray bottle to have on hand. The addition of an alcohol based mouthwash helps too. Another good product for bugs is Neem oil spray. It is made from the nuts of the Neem tree and is safe to use. Safers slug bait is an environmental control for slugs. Earwigs make be trapped by mixing equal parts of corn syrup, cooking oil and full salt soy sauce. Put 1/2 inch of it in a small container and bury it up to the rim where you have a problem with them. Prop something over the top leaving a small hole for the earwigs to crawl in.

There are safe ways to kill nasty bugs. Flowers look good in the garden but they are not that effective at keeping bugs away
