Help a newbie to use the DC Metro?

I'm a small-town Midwesterner with zero experience using a Metro. I'm planning to stay in Vienna close to the Vienna/Fairfax Station. Most everything I plan to see is along the Orange line except Arlington (blue line?) and the Zoo (red line?)

Can I purchase the SmartCard AT the station or do I need to ahead of time?

Can I use the SmartCard to also pay for daily parking at the Station?

Are the signs/directions fairly straightforward for when I get off one line and need to get to the next color line? (Ie change Orange to Blue or whatever)

THANK YOU!

Yes, you can purchase the card at the station. You can also order it in advance at the Metro website for delivery to your home: http://www.wmata.com/

Yes, it also works for Metro parking lots and garages.

The signs are clear. Just know the color of the line you are transferring to and the "direction", which is typically the last station on the line. For instance, to get back to where you are staying, you would transfer to an Orange line in the direction of "Vienna", which happens to be the last stop of the line.

yes, you buy the smart card at any station. You put money on the card at any station. Yes you use the smart card for parking also.

Yes, it's very straightforward to use the system. If not, ask anyone and they will help you. The worst that will happen is you miss a station and just double back.
