How much does it cost to build a balcony?

I want a small balcony from my second story window. It would probably only be 5x6 or so, just enough to put one chair and some potted plants. I don't need it to be fancy either, just your cheapest basic materials. I have a friend who is a construction worker and would probably be able to do most of the installation himself, so labor doesn't really play a factor in the cost. With those conditions, what would be the price range? Thanks!

your biggest issue here is how will it be attached.. This is a large enough section it will need support. You have 500lbs of wood and materials plus human weight and other things. you could be looking at a unit holding over 1K lbs. So the distance from the bottom of the balcony to solid ground is a concern. also the exterior of the home you have to firmly attach the base to a interior floor joist or brace. Then how are you going to access said balcony? an existing window may work and not have to mess with to much but if you want a door thats a WHOLE other issue. The your friend they may work in construction but that doesnt mean he knows about building codes and structural if he is a tiles or throws sheet rock. So taking mild worst case scenario here supplies wood brackets screws stain or paint building permits(look in to this most places anything higher than 30" off the ground you need a permit), if you need to sink a few footings concrete. this little balcony could be 2-3K or more depending on what problems you run into and yes you will have unforeseen issues..

Buck is right, unseen there is no way to give you an adequate estimate. You didn't mention what the patio roof is. Balconies need to be supported into the house.......bolted in and posts to the ground, properly set.....footings, concrete, etc. If the balcony had no support to the ground, it could be cantilevered in.......which is tough on an existing house as you are talking major beam work. Architect for sure!!! and house disruption. If the patio roof is cheap, maybe it can come down and a whole new system installed that would allow for a balcony and still cover the patio. $20,000 might cover it, but I suspect more. That's a lot of money for something that will be rarely used.

30 years of experience speaking here.

I would keep an add on balcony at 4 feet or less. You can make it as long as you want, but going over 4 feet away from the house is going to require post going to the ground instead of angled legs going back to the side of the house.

When the legs go to the ground it is no longer a balcony, but a porch.

As for material cost for a 4x6 balcony. I would suggest you call Home Depot or another local lumber yard to get an estimate. Their sales staff are use to answering these questions and prices vary so much from one area to another that it truly would be hard to give you an honest estimate without knowing where you live.

usually, the answer is determined by the square foot. I am a fla certified contractor my price would be $8-$10 per square foot, depending the degree of difficulty..the patio would need to go to allow for support of the balcony. Nothing is free. I would never bid a project sight unseen.
