Have these people got a leg to stand on?

Question

I am a member of a local club, four years ago, we rented out our dining room and kitchen to this husband/wife catering company. Both sides to give thirty days notice of cancellation. Thirty days ago, we gave them notice that the monthly lease would not be renewed (they were paying about $900 per month rent but it was costing up $1700 per month to allow them to stay there. Now they have decided that they are going to sue the club for $40 000 for what they claim will be lost earnings from now until April 2015.
So are they trying to pull a fast one and hope we pay up, or are they barking up the wrong tree?

They are full of crap.  You have followed the contract & have given them proper & legal notice.  They can whine & cry all they want to but there is really nothing they can do about it.  If they CHOOSE not to seek another location & up again someplace else & lose money then that's on them.   They signed the same contract you did so the possibility of a 30 day notice at some point shoudl be no surprise unless they are delusional & thought they could just rent there forever! .

I'm sure they are hoping you will continue the lease. If, as you say, you gave them the 30 days notice required in the written rental agreement, then they have no case. If you have no written agreement, then it depends on state law.

If the contract is as you described, they have no LEGITIMATE case.
If they are non-white, a gay couple, Muslim etc, the burden of poof will be ON YOU to PROVE you are not "discriminating."

raise the rent 800 bucks....now they are only out 5 thousand...right...so, which one of you is lying...
