My friends made me pay for my birthday dinner?

Yesterday was my 16th birthday and two of my good friends, who I met through a common interest that we both have so they are both significantly older than me, invited me to go out for my birthday. I chose the restaurant and it wasn't an expensive one. One of my friends and I even shared something, so it just made things even more complicated when she asked the waitress to split the price of that dish. It is just really irritating to me that I am only 16, they are both in their 20s and married with their own house, yet they couldn't even offer to pay for my very inexpensive dinner that they invited me out to. They didn't even get me a card. I am not trying to sound materialistic or anything because their presence was greatly appreciated, but I was just wondering if my upset feelings are okay to feel.

You're never wrong for how you feel.

However, being in their 20's, married and having their own home doesn't actually mean they have a lot of money. Most people in their young 20's don't really have a lot of money. They're in school, lower paying jobs, have small kids, etc.

When you go out with friends birthday or not you should always intend to cover your own expenses. If they offer to pay it that's fine for you to accept but shouldn't really be an expectation.

It really sounds like it was a miscommunication and really just a group of people going out to eat together.

Myself knowing teenagers generally do not have a lot of disposible income would have paid for you but I can afford to, not everyone can.

Were they under any obligation to pay? I doubt it. If they were your best friends who you've been with for a large part of your life, invited you out, chose the restaurant and offered to pay it would be different.

You're upset feelings are fine. They just show that you thought of them as closer friends than they thought of you. I went to many birthday dinners and everyone always pays for themselves. If we got to some sort of club then they will buy the birthday boy or girl drinks.

Today, it is not always clear what is the respectful thing to do.

Most friends would have paid the tab. In this case did your friends extend the invitation or did you invite them ?

I sure wouldn't consider them good friends. They were very rude to invite you to eat and then made you pay. Plus asking the waitress to split one dish was even worse. I would rethink this relationship.

Yeah I would feel the same way to.

Like what the hell is that about?

How are they going to invite you out to eat, one of them shared a plate or whatever with you , and then make you pay.

That's dumb, their dumb, and next time make them pay.

Eat your food and then excuse yourself to the bathroom and then just walk out. If someone stops you tell them the people you came with are paying.

Then while there sitting there drive by the window closest to their table , honk the horn, and flick them off, then drive away.

    Revenge is the best feeling.

Then it's a good thing, you chose the restaurant. But they shouldn't have made you pay, because not only was it your bd, they invited you.

It sounds like they just don't know how to be real friends... or they're being mean on purpose. Whatever the case, distance yourself for awhile. Happy belated birthday. Do something nice for yourself.

It is reasonable to assume if someone invites you out for dinner that they are paying for it. At least you know now, if it they 'invite' you again.

Its totally okay to feel like that. Your birthday is a special day just for you! You shouldn't have to pay for your own dinner especially since they're adults, plus they invited YOU out!!!!
