car's acceleration problems help?

Any help please? My father wants to give his p.o.s. Chevy Lumina to my son as his 1st car.

You can floor the car on an off ramp and it goes 0 to 65 in just under a minute. But this only happens when the weather is extremely warm. It runs completely decent any other time.

I changed the plugs and the air filter for my father during the summer, but the problem continued. Any idea what may be causing that?

If the fuel filter wasnt in the tank I would say change it. besides that the lumina was never a good car it could just be old and worn. You can also clean the MAF sensor may help..
