Laissez faire was bad (during gilded age) because since the government did not interfere, the working class conditions were awful. For example, they had low pay and long hours.

You need to understand the notion of "begging the question". Not the new sense but the sense of "begging the question" as defined before 1990, when it meant something else. For example the prosecuting attorney asks, "do you still beat your wife." That is really multiple questions:

1) Do you have a wife?

2) Did you EVER beat her?

3) Are you still beating her now.
