How do I install my External WD 1.0 TB Hard Drive into my Windows 7 desktop? There is data on it I must keep. OS wants to format it?

You need to just plug it in to the side of the computer. The external hard drives come with a plug attachment.
The only thing your computer would want to do is to install the driver for the hard drive to work. That will come from the actual external hard drive.
It won't want to format it at all. I'm not sure why your computer wants to do that.
