Republican McKinley won in ...a close race... in both popular and electoral votes. He was the first republican to change the republican party for it's 4th incarnation, to become going forward the party based on the rich, the well off, big business and 'conservatives'. ( A description it holds to this this day).

The issues were the country had been in a 4 year republican recession.

The hoarding of gold and silver by the rich was an issue as it stopped the economy.

The gold standard/silver standard was brought up as it allowed the private holders of those metal chunks to control the economy and thereby the country.

The populists of the south, west, were outvoted by the business trusting 'conservatives' of the industrial New England, the Mideast, Midwest, California.
