It's possible. After all, "atheism" just refers to a lack of belief in one or more deities. An atheist can technically believe in anything else at all, even non-theistic supernatural things like ghosts or reincarnation. I personally know of one or two atheists who believe in ghosts. They claim to have had spooky experiences they could not explain away through recourse to non-supernatural causes.

Actually atheists who believe in the supernatural is more common than one might think, especially in Asia. Many Buddhists and adherents of other eastern philosophical religions are non-theistic. Yet they still believe in supernatural tenets like the Buddhist doctrine of spiritual rebirth. They just don't believe there's a God behind it all:

In practice though, most atheists in the West are also empiricists. If you're not familiar with the concept, it refers to the philosophy that sensory experience is the primary (or only) basis for knowledge about our reality. (In this context, "sensory experience" refers both to the reality we can directly observe and that which we can indirectly know about through scientific experiments involving microscopes and other instruments that augment human sensory powers.) Empiricists generally do not believe in anything supernatural because they don't think this "realm" has any basis in sensory experience.

I can speak only for myself, and SOME atheists I've know or know of. No, I don't believe in any supernatural anything.

It's possible SOME atheists believe in SOME supernatural somethings.

Atheism isn't a single unified body of opinion. Most people on R&S describing themselves as atheists are actually metaphysically naturalistic atheists who are also scientific realists and often also seem to have a lot of confidence in the omnicompetence of science. That's a particular variety of atheism and there are others. For instance, as i never cease to drone on about, the Jain religion is powerfully and assertively atheist but also believes strongly in the supernatural, including such things as a separate soul and body, demons and other spiritual beings and reincarnation. In recent centuries, Western atheism has tended to be sceptical about the supernatural, but not all atheists are like that. For instance, some people don't believe in God but do believe in an afterlife, reincarnation or psychic abilities, even in European-derived cultural milieux.

    Some do, most don't...

We're learning more and more about how the brain works and the reality is that people that are born with the genetics/brain biology for theism that are raised in Atheistic family systems/cultures will turn their biology to something else and it WILL BE EXPRESSED.

When you have the brain biology/genetics for theism and lack indoctrination into a specific cult, you can express that biology in many ways...

There are secular cults, such as my uncle, for example, is an atheist but his damaged brain biology has been turned towards political ideology. Either you worship at the alter of The Clinton's and Obama's or you are a HERETIC! His little culdasac is full of other Leftist Cult Members and it really became obvious that it was a cult when one of their neighbors was discovered to be a gun owner. They were raised in Arizona and like the sport of shooting.

From then on, they were shunned by everyone else in the neighborhood despite otherwise 100% following the leftist mantra and it got so bad that they're now selling their home and moving because they are now Untouchables and they aren't invited to neighborhood parties or spoken to or anything.

    They are heretics!

Then you have "Causers". People that have found a "Cause" to support that becomes their cult. PETA, the ELF/ALF, GreenPeace, etc. are now cults. They are cults because you have people willing to die for and, more importantly, KILL FOR THE CAUSE. You either accept that the ends justify the means to "Save" people and animals or else you are against the cause.

Then you have magical thinking cults...

Homeopathy... Big Foot... Ghosts... Planet-X... Ancient Aliens... These require magical thinking and the biology for theism but are not god based cults.

Even when you have people that dedicate their lives to some goal or team that is a cult like behavior... Like the guy that spends 15 years building his man cave shrine to his fave football team and he spends all his time dedicated to learning statistics and following them around when they play away games... That's a cult like behavior.

They can, I suppose, but the vast majority of us dont. Atheism is specifically about the question of whether or not a god or gods exist. I suppose its possible for atheists to believe in angels, or spirits, or ghosts, and so on. Although viewing claims about gods in a skeptical light will probably cause a person to do the same with other supernatural and/or paranormal claims as well.

    Some do, some don't.

The only think atheists have in common is the conclusion, usually based on the utter lack of countervailing evidence, that there is no god. Other than that, atheists vary in beliefs and in world views and in political tendencies as much as any other diverse group does.

The beliefs of atheists, aside from not believing in god, are as varied as those of any other group of people on earth.

However, atheists tend to be rational thinkers, so any claim of something supernatural would have to be backed up by evidence of same.

    Some do, others do not.

An atheist is a person that believes there is no God. The definition goes no farther. An atheist, like anyone else, may believe or disbelieve in many other things, real or imagined, logical or illogical.

Your average atheist is a skeptic and a skeptic does not believe in something unless there is pretty good evidence to support it. There are claims of supernatural but they lack the solid evidence.

Not this one, but as long as they don't believe in a god an atheist can believe anything else and still be an atheist.
