DNA question about genomes?

Update:

The E.coli genome is approximately 4600 kilobase pairs (kb) in size and contains about 4000 genes. An average gene in E.coli is 1000 base pairs (bp) long. Calculate the percentage of the E.coli genome that is not transcribed.

Update 2:

How do I calculate this?

So, if you have 4000 genes and each is 1000 bp long, then these will require 4000 genes X 1000 bp/gene = 4X10^6 base pairs.

4600 kbp = 4.6X10^6 bp. So, the unused part of the genome is 6X10^5 pb

    Percent unused = (6X10^5 / 4.6X10^6) X 100 = 13%
