The conflict is now between a few extremists on both sides, who have drifted into crime and international terrorism. UK and Irish governments are friends.

Northern Ireland is not occupied by England. Northern Ireland is an equal partner in UK with England, Scotland and Wales. The majority of its residents wish to keep it that way.

The Republic of Ireland does not support the IRA. Furthermore, it is bankrupt and could not afford to have Northern Ireland, which is heavily subsidised by UK.

Currently the Irish conflict continues in agreed truce and peace from both sides since year 2000.

1.) Begun....The overall conflict began in the Middle Ages when England invaded in war, took over and occupied Ireland (1200AD-1600AD). Countless rebellions against the English occupation took place in those 400 years sometimes succeeding but the English military always came back to rule the country by force. In the 1600's things got much worse. The English ethnically cleansed the NE quarter of Scotland killing and driving out the entire Irish population there, making any survivors serfs and repopulating the empty land with loyal British Scotsman from Scotland and loyal English settlers. So, it stayed till the mid 1800's when 1/3 of the Irish starved to death during continued British occupation. Ireland finally got it's independence back (1921) after yet another very brutal cruel war and civil war but never got that NE 1/4 back which became (and still is) British Northern Ireland.

2.) Conflict is a free united Ireland in it's own country (including the NE) free and independent from British rule whether remaining British occupation of still 1/4 of the country should be ended.

The Irish v the British/ British Scots/ British Scots-Irish. All Irish basically are Catholics, all British basically Protestants.

3.) Religion long ago became a identifying 'badge' of who was for Ireland and Irish and who was for Britain and British.

4.) There haven't been any 'major' conflicts to date during this now 14 year ceasefire as far as I've heard. But the problem remains...3/4 of Ireland is free and independent again since 1921, but that NE 1/4 of Ireland remains under firm British grip and populated by a 50% British population. Ireland intends to get that part of their country back and the British out, if it takes forever.
