If I am using a 5x taperd leader is it ok to attach a 6x or a 7x tippet?

I have been fly fishing for about 2 years now and have always wonderd, If I am using a 5x taperd leader is it ok to attach a 6x or a 7x tippet? I know you can replace the tippet material of the original leader with 5x since the leader is 5x. But I have always heard that when you are fishing clearer/slower water you need to use a finer tippet. In this case 6x or 7x.

Update:

since the fish in clearer/slower water will obviously be more spooky or cautious

Yes, use 6 or 7x on your 5x tapered leader ,no problem. Use a surgeon's knot to connect them. You can learn a great deal about leaders by building your own. It is easy and you can design them how you want. There are many helpful things in the web and in books about making your own leaders.

Yes you can attach 6x or 7x tippet. I did it during my fishing on Cold Springs. Though you should be a bit more careful as these tippets are thinner and break easier.

What some do is cut back until the tippet matches the tapered leader and they also use a loop to loop system or tippet rings.
