Is it okay to keep your computer in sleep mode for long periods of time?

Lots of people I know--particularly those with laptop computers--leave them on all the time--either in sleep or hibernate mode. Does this in anyway shorten the life of the computer?

In hibernate, the computer shuts down. In sleep, the computer stays on (but turns many components off). If the computer is running (as in sleep mode) then it can cause the life to be shorter than if you had hibernated or turned it off, although the difference between sleep and off is not too great.
