How to change the gauge scale in knitting?

Update:

Okay, so I want to knit a sweater that calls for size 8 needles, but I want to use size 10. The gauge for size 10 is 16 sts to 4in and the size 8 gauge is 20 sts to 4in. If the pattern tells me to cast on 59 sts for a size 8 needle, how many do I have to cast on for a size 10 needle?

This sounds like a word problem, haha.

You divide the number of stitches by 20 and multiply by 16.

If there is a pattern you may then need to add or subject a few stitches to fit the pattern repeat and make the pattern match at the seams.
