Convicts were transported to america from about 1614-16 from britain, virginia was the favourite location, in the late 17th and early 18th century some convicts were sent to the west indies, the transportation act of 1718 gave british courts the power to sentence those convicted of certain offences to terms of transportation to north america, the sentence was either 7 or 14 years, the shipping of convicts was carried out by private contractors, who recouped the money they spent by selling convicts as servants to american employers,by 1776 about a thousand people a year were being sent to america. The war of independence ended this and by 1790 transportation to australia (botany bay) was well under way, the practice finally ended in 1867. many people do not realise that the british transported people to america, australia is much more known as a receiver of convicts.
