So I'm thinking of buying a mini cooper. Probably around 2005. Can't decide between the soft and hard top, so does anyone have any ideas?
Are there any underlying faults with soft tops that I'm not aware of? I.e, leaking roofs, not durable?
In the event someone says I won't use the soft top much, I think I would just like to have the option.
Opinions?

Soft-top convertibles need ongoing repairs and maintenance to keep water out. One thieving idiot or vandal with a sharp knife and you can expect a very expensive cost to replace the damaged top, plus all the items inside your car that would be damaged or stolen. Finally, how often will you actually be able to drive with the top down to make the convertible worthwhile? During rain, strong sunshine or high-speed long-distance driving, you will need the top up for your and your passengers' comfort. In summary, the hard top Mini Cooper will be the same amount of fun with a lot less aggravation and expense.
Try renting a convertible car (any make or model) for a week, to see if any open-top car is what you really want.

If you can keep it in the garage, then get a soft top. If you cant hard top. Keep in mind a soft top will be cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer, hail can damage it, and if you roll over its not as safe.
