The living are conscious that they will die,” said wise King Solomon. (Ecclesiastes 9:5) We try to live as long as possible. Still, we wonder what will happen to us when we die.
What happens at death is no mystery to Jehovah, the Creator of the brain. He knows the truth, and in his Word, the Bible, he explains the condition of the dead. Its clear teaching is this: When a person dies, he ceases to exist. Death is the opposite of life. The dead do not see or hear or think. Not even one part of us survives the death of the body. We do not possess an immortal soul or spirit.
After Solomon observed that the living know that they will die, he wrote: “As for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.” He then enlarged on that basic truth by saying that the dead can neither love nor hate and that “there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in [the grave].” (Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, 10) Similarly, Psalm 146:4 says that when a man dies, “his thoughts do perish.” We are mortal and do not survive the death of our body. The life we enjoy is like the flame of a candle. When the flame is put out, it does not go anywhere. It is simply gone.
Was it God’s original purpose for people to die? Not at all! Jehovah made man to live forever on earth. As we learned earlier in this book, God placed the first human couple in a delightful paradise. He blessed them with perfect health. Jehovah wanted only good for them. Does any loving parent want his children to suffer the pain of old age and death? Of course not! Jehovah loved his children and wanted them to enjoy endless happiness on earth. Concerning humans, the Bible says: “Time indefinite [Jehovah] has put in their heart.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11) God created us with the desire to live forever. And he has opened the way for that desire to be fulfilled.

For perhaps 15 years I thought not a lot happens, just neural experience for a few minutes then nothing.
For perhaps 10 years I thought we might in some way return to a universal consciousness, blend back in....
Then something happened physically in just a way it could never happen, right after a prayer, and suddenly I knew....He is as real as your feet on the Earth.

Nothing... It is a return to the dust, from we come...
"18 I also said in my heart about the sons of men that the true God will test them and show them that they are like animals, 19 for there is an outcome for humans and an outcome for animals; they all have the same outcome. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit. So man has no superiority over animals, for everything is futile. 20 All are going to the same place. They all come from the dust, and they all are returning to the dust" (Ecclesiastes 3:18-20. Bible).

What happens when people die?
The body without the spirit is dead. For it is the spirit that dwells in the body and it's what makes the body move to and fro. But when the spirit is absent from the body, it's present with the Lord. The body returns to its origin formation of dust, and the spirit returns to God. So the spirit never dies, but the physical body dies and goes back to dust. The only thing we take with us, is our deeds.

The synapses in your brain cease to function and your brain cells can no longer communicate with each other of your body. All life processes stop, the body mortifies and rots unless someone fills it with preservatives or dehydrates. Your consciousness , all you think and believe are lost for ever.
Basically the software dies with the hard drive.

When a person dies they go to the spirit world. Christians and children go to the Paradise of God in Heaven, and unbelievers go to spirit prison. (1Peter 3:19,20)
Later there is a resurrection of the righteous and unrighteous. Next is the final judgment.
