Why does Jesus defend gay people and hold them equal to heterosexuals in the Bible?

Sin is sin, whether you are a fornicator or homosexual, sin is sin. I have sinned in many ways and I don't think that that makes me higher to God than homosexuals. If I choose to continue living in sin my punishment will be the same as all sinners.
