How do I make my pet rats like me? **Please read details**?

Got them two days ago and they are both males and younger/medium sized rats. Purchased these two guys from petco and from what I researched, that isn't the best place to get them b/c of rare positive human interactions. Right now I'm trying to teach their names by giving them a tiny TINY amount of cheese on a q-tip stick (not the cotton) and introducing them around the house by sections. Also, if they nibble on my finger I yell No! loudly. When they do not nibble I give them a tiny treat. Any advice on how to make my pet rats like me and other humans because I would like them to become very social and obedient to others.

Just give them time to adjust. I had the same problem with my boys (Titus and Marley) I thought they were always going to be scared. Make sure you give them lots of love, attition and treats. And I always make the same noise when I come to there cage so they know I'm coming, I use the same noise you make when calling for a cat. Try holding peices of treats outside the cage and see if they'll take the treat out of your hand if not just put the treat in the cage and try again with another later. Eventually they'll get used to you and it'll be all cuddles and kisses and they'll come running to the cage door to play anytime they see you. Try not to yell at them though that's probably scaring them. When you pick them up use the "scoop method" (taking both your hands and scooping them up from underneath.) I also later added another little boy (Denom) and i had no problems with him at all he's always been spunky, adventures, and verry loving.

getting your rats to like you is a pretty lengthy proccess, and you can't expect it to happen overnight. first you need to give them some time to adjust to their new surroundings if you've just gotten them, so about two days like you've done I'm guessing. be around the cage alot, not really poking or playing with them, just sit next to and around it so they get used to your presence. leave your hand in the cage, not doing much but just letting them sniff at it and climb on it so they're used to being on you. Mice and rats should never eat cheese, because as Beth said they're lactose intolerant. They LOVE peanutbutter (don't give them too much as they will choke because it's sticky), tree nuts, fruits and vegetables (don't give them grapes or raisins), etc. Never give them garlic, either.

play with them a couple times a day, both in and out of the cage. let them crawl around on you, sit in your lap and you can also play games with them in the cage, like hiding treats all around the cage and letting them find them (do this around the same time every day, and eventually they'll be actually very excited for it!). Your rat's personalities also effect how fast it will take for them to like you. With some it will take a mere week and others it can take a month or longer. Be patient,. don't get frustrated and force them to do something they don't want to, like getting in your hand when they don't want to be picked up or waking them up to play with you. Yelling at them can also frighten them, and if you scare them a lot it will take them a while to get used to you because they will associate you with fear. Good luck!

Please make sure to not feed any rat cheese, it is a common misconception that rats like cheese, they are lactose intolerant. Also, try not to shout at your rats, they make associate you as being unpleasant, treating them respectfully and kindly will win over you new friends. Whenever they approach or investigate you award them a small treat, within time they will become fully adjusted to you.
