93 Holden Rodeo 2.6 Isuzu backfiring through intake?

I have a 93 Holden Rodeo 2.6 Isuzu motor that I have just fitted (reconditioned) and it is backfiring through intake. it also sounds different when turning over compared to old motor. it seems to sound fine when at a higher amount of revs but it wont idle, and it runs rough at low revs. I also noticed some greyish smoke from exhaust.I have checked timing belt and it is fine (marks line up) and the sparkplug leads are in order compared to old motor. what is wrong? and how can it be fixed? thanks

Update:

by back firing I mean- with intake unclipped, it bounces and it has spat out the meshy stuff of the maf sensor (mind you this was by pouring a little bit of fuel into the intake not much but just to see I i had successfully fixed the oil filter compartment because fuel pump is not working- new one coming). and by sounding different to old motor I mean the beat sounds different when winding over. thanks

Hi so the ignition timing is out either too far advanced or retarded.
