Suppose it is base 10.
log(x + 3) = -2
x + 3 = 10^-2
x + 3 = 1/100
x = 1/100 - 3
x = 1/100 - 300/100
x = -299/100
If it is base e instead:
log(x + 3) = -2
x + 3 = e^-2
x = -3 - e^-2

log (x + 3) = -2 <<< log implies base 10 ... do inverse log
x + 3 = 10^-2 = 0.01
x = -2.99 <<< answer
