Any drawbacks or problems associated with using sand and gravel from a parking lot as a planting medium?
I am using the parking lot sweepings, sand, concrete chips, dirt, a few cigarette butts, etc, in the bottom of planter boxes, with the top being a mix of compost and potting soil.
Anyone tried this before? How did your plants grow?

I'm not experienced with gardening, but I do know that parking lot sands and gravels can have oil and other chemicals from autos in it, which may kill your plants. I'd stick to a soil of the correct acidity, preferably heat sterilized if not store bought.

Yuck. Cigarette buts and crap in the bottom of your plant pots? I don't think so. You need some small stones in order to keep the growing medium from falling out the bottom of the pots. After that, you fill up the pot with good potting soil and plant the flowers. Tobacco is toxic to many plants (especially tomatoes), so leave them where they belong - on the ground!
