Is Jesus a myth?

Christianity was the ultimate product of religious syncretism in the ancient world. Its emergence owed nothing to a holy carpenter. There were many Jesuses but the fable was a cultural construct.

The nativity yarn is a concatenation of nonsense. The genealogies of Jesus, both Matthew's version and Luke's, are pious fiction. Nazareth did not exist in the 1st century AD – the area was a burial ground of rock-cut tombs.

With multiple authors behind the original gospel story it is no surprise that the figure of "Jesus" is a mess of contradictions. Yet the story is so thinly drawn that being a "good Christian" might mean almost anything.

The 12 disciples are as fictitious as their master, invented to legitimise the claims of the early churches. The original Mary was not a virgin, that idea was borrowed from pagan goddesses. The pagan world knew all about virgins getting pregnant by randy gods: The Mythical "Virgin Mother".

Scholars have known all this for more than 200 years but priestcraft is a highly profitable business and finances an industry of deceit to keep the show on the road.

"Jesus better documented than any other ancient figure"? Don't believe a word of it. Unlike the mythical Jesus, a real historical figure like Julius Caesar has a mass of mutually supporting evidence.

Update:

It is intuitively satisfying to think that someone was behind the towering legend. Yet like the worship of Horus or Mithras a human life was neither necessary nor helpful.

As it happens, we have an excellent witness to events in Judaea in the first half of the first century AD: Philo of Alexandria (c. 25 BC-47 AD). Yet Philo says not a word about Jesus or Christianity!

Nothing in the 'Christian message' was original. Brotherly love and compassion had been taught by the Stoics for centuries.

I think it ridiculous to assume Jesus never existed. To me, that is like assuming the Trojan war did not occur.

One does not need to accept supernatural events to understand that religious texts were still describing something that occurred in history.

Lets take the Crucifixion. The most compelling, to me, facts are not in the ways that the cricifixion met with how crucifixion were performed at the time, but where it differed.

You can note that where it differed is compelling, because Jesus was not as long on the cross as most. So much so that Pilate was surprised at his quick death. Neither were Jesus legs broken as was custom to speed the process. Indeed the description is compelling because it brings to light one distinct possibility.

Jesus may not have died on the cross.

Now while people like you, are SOO against theism that you lose your mind and start talkign about how Philo should have written about Jesus (as if all of Plino's works lasted these 2000 years, OR plino talked about every relatively unknown little followed "heretic" of that time), jews have considered this for a long time. ESPECIALLY during the period of the rise of Christianity in jewish culture. Had Jesus not existed, they would ahve dealt with it rather quickly.

IF, however, Jesus appeared to die on the cross. Well that right there is a MIRACLE. Indeed, this is the type of miracle necessary to take the relatively unknown Jesus with hardly any followers who had captured no lands and start a religion.

There simply is no other explanation for the rapid rise of Christianity. It does not happen because soem people secretly made up some character. And those people certainly would not have faced death for something they knowingly made up.

Your stance is truly indefensible. This is why the "historians" who tout this stance are ALWAYS anti-theists who are not respected in the historical community.

Good historians, atheists and theist, wouldnot make such a claim. If they had to throw away every text in the past that had any reference to the supernatural. .... Well they would have nothing to base anything on.

sounds like you feel you have it all figured out, so then why bother inciting a riot with that question, or are you just trollin' some more?

only problem is, at this point, there is no way of positively proving or disproving the existence of Jesus (or God for that matter). concurrently, you either beliee or you don't, it doesn't really matter which (well, philosophically anyways). it's not as though Jesus had any bad advice, and in fact, His words have actually helped the distraught.

again, just a thought, but there is just as much "evidence" supporting the existence as "denying" it...

    According to Vyatcheslav Krasheninnikov:

Demons grow human skin and put it on so as to look like us.

Demons will invite people to be healed inside their UFOs; those who go will be like zombies after.

Gov't provides demons with diamonds and allows demons to abduct people.

If you're being abducted, pray the Jesus prayer.

Demons use diamonds and souls to power their UFO craft.

The bigger the diamond, the more it lasts.

    Demons have 4 UFO bases:

    1)Moon

2)Inside fake mountain Kailash in Tibet

    3)In lake Baikal in Russia

4)In Atlantis which is underneath the Mariana Trench in Pacific Ocean.

    There are no aliens.

    Nobody lives on other planets.

Airplanes that go down are hit by demons because they need the airspace to fight Jesus.

There is a story about George Washington chopping down his daddy's cherry tree. Even though it never happened, George was real.

There is a song about Davy Crockett killing a bear, when he was a mere 3 years old.

Although it never happened, Davy was real.

Just because there are stories and songs about Jesus, including stuff that never happened, it doesn't mean Jesus of Nazareth was never a walking, talking human being.

Negative, There is overwhelming evidence for the existence of Jesus Christ, both in secular and biblical history. Perhaps the greatest evidence that Jesus did exist is the fact that literally thousands of Christians in the first century A.D., including the twelve apostles, were willing to give their lives as martyrs for Jesus Christ. People will die for what they believe to be true, but no one will die for what they know to be a lie.

The biblical Jesus was clearly a myth give how little evidence of him there is outside the bible. The character was probably loosely based on a real person however.

Jesus the Christ is definitively just a myth, although there may have been a person called Jesus who went about preaching.

    Someone undoubtedly existed.

Unfortunately his publicity machine went a bit over the top.

Totally. The whole story is complete fabrication cobbled together from old Jewish prophesies, contemporary Pagan religions and lies about conjuring and con tricks.

The modern conception of Jesus certainly is a myth. Most people seem to think of him as loving, compassionate, inclusive, and very concerned about the poor. There is no such Jesus in the bible.
