Rephrasing my previous question: In an advanced society like ours, would religion develop if it was not there previously?

Sorry, I phrased it wrong last time.

Advanced compared to our previous states.

Mankind possessing an inquisitive mind had a need to identify with, come to terms with and explain that which they felt was significant in life but could not explain. This is why we have created and worshipped so many gods through history. As man became more able and knowledgeable most have been resigned to myth, lore and legend or simply forgotten. The warm and fuzzy feeling provided by the belief in gods will never go away and is actually a valid and creative thing for many. It is not the faiths, beliefs, or religions which are a danger to humanity but that which we choose to justify and validate in the bastardization of such that is.

    I would say yes.

It's human nature to search for deeper meanings in life that transcend the realities of our everyday existence. It's comforting to know that death is not the end. As a spiritual person myself, I believe we have these longings for a deeper sense of purpose to our lives and existence because there really is one.

Now if religion was not there previously, the sort of religion that develops may not closely resemble existing religious faiths like Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Wicca or whatever. But it would nevertheless attempt to provide people with a sense of purpose and meaning in life, a moral code by which to live, and a sense of ultimate destiny.

In fact, I would point out that religious/spiritual movements like the "New Age" are essentially modern phenomena that aren't simply extensions of older religious traditions. The same could happen in a society that wasn't previously religious.

    1) People are still prone to asking "Why are we here?"

    2) Truth is spiritually discerned so accepted 'facts' cannot entirely override it for those seeking the truth.

    3) People already seek out God in spite of their families and culture, not infrequently because of the fact that they are picking up on the spiritual.
