The 'iPad' is a line of tablet computers by Apple. You've seen them. They run apps to do different things. It does a great job at everything, except being a light-weight book reader. It's just too heavy, in my opinion.

The 'Kindle' is a LINE of products from Amazon. While primarily focused on being a great book reader, their 'Kindle Fire' offering is the most 'tablet-like' of the series.

So, if you want a great book reading device, that's light, easy to see, and has a long-lasting battery -- take a look at the Kindle's non-Fire offerings. But, if you want to compare something to an iPad -- compare a Kindle Fire to the iPad.

The major differences are, the Kindle is manufactured by Amazon and has the Android operating system. The iPad is manufactured by Apple and has the IOS operating sytstem.

Now, the ipad also has a better built quality, with a better camera and more storage.

The other differences are between the two different operating system they have.

Android is mostly free and allows you to personalize your kindle the way you want it. ISO is more restrictive.

Kindle ereader - grayscale eInk screen, no audio, no video - is for reading books

Kindle Fire tablet - custom Android OS color tablet w/ Amazon-centric desktop, only portable device that supports some features of Kindle Prime.subscription, can only use apps from Amazon App store (so many apps not available)

iPad - Apple iOS color tablet that uses apps from the Apple/iTunes app store.

    and you forgot

standard Google-approved Android Tablet - like Nexus 7 - color tablet that gets apps from the Google Play Store

By "color tablet" I mean a color LCD device that can browse over Wifi (if you have a WIfi network), play videos, play music, use apps and game apps
