Alsatians became more suited to the job as they are more obedient, easier to train, better stamina. An overall better selection. Doberman's were originally used due to their intimidating nature and body strength rather than their overall suitability to the job role.

the ONLY reason doberman and boxers were potentially more popular was the silly fact the german shepherding dog had >german< in its name. needless to say, the two other breeds originate in Germany, too.
