Need help with a math problem?

Let L be the line given by the equation y=26-3x.

a. Find the equation of the line that is parallel to L and passes through the points (4,-9)

b. Find the equation of the line that is perpendicular to L and passes through the points (-6,7)

    Parallel lines have equal slopes and as you know, if y = mx + b, m is slope so this line has slope -3 and so will any parallel line. That's y = -3x + b. Plug in 4 for x and -9 for y to see what b is:

    -9 = (-3)4 + b

    -9 = -12 + b

    3 = b so y = -3x + 3

    and perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes so that would be + 1/3. Again plug in (-6,7) for (x,y) to get b

    7 = 1/3 (-6) + b

    7 = -2 + b

    9 = b so y = 1/3 x + 9

    hope that helps
