How is Johnny Cash's voice so unique?

Once you hear Johnny Cash sing, you know it's him. He's unmistakable. There is no one (at least, that is wildly know of) who can sing like him.

But if you listen to him, he seems like he has such a simple voice.

Does he sing in some sort of pattern or with some sort of technique that's difficult, or extraordinarily rare?

You would think that he wouldn't be so hard to imitate... so... what is it exactly that makes his voice so unique?

"How is Johnny Cash's voice so unique?"

There was a gravelly tone to it, set aside from the voice others. Also he was more of a balladeer style singer. He could reach into to your heart, and you could feel the joy, or the pain he was talking about. He also had that unique ability to reach all ages, and across the different generations. It was also that simplicity in his voice that made him become the legend he was. He also did as so few have done in the world of music, and that was transcending genres. I had a friend who was very much a fan of classical music, and not so much for Country and Western, yet Cash held a prominent place in his collection as did only a very small few. I asked why, and he said "my music collection would not be complete. I pressed a bit further with one more question of why, and the basic answer was, Johnny Cash was in his opinion, a master of his craft. As for a better explanation, I could myself do no better, no matter how I could try.
