Emotional support animal to live in a no-pet allowed apartment?

So I just adopted a 8 month old, 5 pound dog (not growing any larger). I currently am a college student living in a non-pet friendly apartment complex. However, I have heard of just purchasing an "emotional support animal" lisence for like $70. Apparently once you have this, the complex can not charge you a pet fee, or anything like that…

Is this true? I obviously do not have any type of emotional instability, however I am in love with this dog, and want to keep him in any way that I can.

As everyone has already mentioned, getting a fake ESA license is just a bad idea all around.

Your best bet is to have a back-up plan for the puppy (someone who will take him/her if everything backfires) and to be upfront with your landlord. Pay the pet fee, and offer to let your landlord check in on a regular basis to make sure their property isn't being ruined.

There's also the option of moving to another apartment. The apartment I live in near my college allows pets with a deposit, so it's not impossible to find a pet-friendly college apartment.

No such thing as an "Emotional Support Animal License". ESAs are animals that are basically prescribed by a physician or psychiatrist as part of an ongoing treatment plan for someone who is so mentally or emotionally ill that they are legally disabled by it. They must be requested to be allowed as an accommodation for the person's disability. The request must be accompanied by documentation from the disabled person's doctor that certifies they meet the definition of disabled as set forth by the ADA, outlines the ways in which the animal mitigates the disability, and specifies that allowing the animal is necessary for you to live in the residence. This is IN ADVANCE of bringing the animal onto the property. Not all landlords must allow them. The law does not prohibit the charging of a pet deposit for an ESA, though many landlords do choose to waive the deposit.

As you're not disabled, I suggest you find new housing that allows your pet.

Save your $70, it's a scam. And an ESA is only (potentially) allowed if you have been diagnosed with a mental illness that requires one - and it needs to be documented and certified by a mental health professional. You will be discovered, and will have 48 hours to get rid of the dog or be faced with eviction. That never looks good on your credit report and will follow you forever. It was very selfish and irresponsible of you to adopt a dog without consideration of your lease and the consequences. And bogus "ESA" dogs make it really bad for people who do have a legitimate mental health disorder. Shame on you, and grow up.

An 'Emotional Support Animal' is not a service dog, and you can't get a license for one.

Plus, an 8 month old is a puppy and too young to pass for anything like that.

You shouldn't have adopted a dog in the first place if you are not allowed them in your home.

    Nope

An ESA is only a pet therefore is not allowed in pet free rentals. If you try to hide it you will be evicted since its only a pet

No such thing as "emotional support animal" license, its a scam and since ESA are only pets you can't register them or anything and there's nothing you can do to keep it other then move out and find a place that allows pets.

NO - and this is the biggest problem I have - those who lie and fake problems just to own a pet. You need to find a place that allows pets.

I have never heard anything like that. Just hide him well
