    That's a tough one.

    For today, I'd pick deaf.

If I were to suddenly go deaf, it would be easier to adapt to my current life than going blind. You can still see movies usually have subtitles, you don't have to learn braille to read and worry what books or other media are or are not available in braille. You can still drive, and do sight related work activities. You can still walk, and see people's expressions.

    But BOTH would be difficult.

Blind. Everyone has experienced darkness and therefore they have some small understanding of what blindness is and can feel sympathy for those who are blind. Also, there's usually a visible sign of their blindness, either a white cane, someone leading them, or just a different way of moving through a room.

Deafness is mostly invisible, and if you don't know that someone is deaf and they don't respond to you, you feel they are ignoring and disrespecting you. Also deafness is equated with aging and loss of youthful abilities, which is scary to many people.

I would rather be Blind than death, because hearing is one sense people really need.
