Can I just Plug and play with a Xbox controller if it's designed for windows?

Update:

I got a PS3 controller, But I cannot get motioninjoy to work. I want to be able to plug in the controller, and bind the keys without the hassle of configuration.

    the Power-A ps3 controllers don't work on steam.

    You need the driver software.
