I was born in 1929, along with the Great Depression in America. I learned to read by going over the daily newspapers And in having a wonderful tolerant mother who always answered my Q's. I learned back then, that the U.S. Government Treasury Dept. went on printing money far beyond the amount of gold held in the U.S. Treasury that was supposed to back up paper money. When the paper money exceeded the amount of gold in the U. S. Treasury, then the printed money became only PAPER MONEY that was not backed up by gold. And the paper money became useless! I remember as a little kid, that my parents did a lot of trading and bargaining. We always had the back half of our property behind the house, planted in large tracts of vegetables. Mother would can a lot of the vegetables, and store them in the cool cave that Dad made under a little hill. She always baked her own bread and the only fruit we ever had was from a stray apple tree down the road that no one owned. In my opinion, the only thing that brought America out of the Great Depression, was when the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor! Our country then mobilized for an all-out war against both Japan and the German and Italian combination in Europe!

The stock market crashed because certain investment crashed. In the 1920's wheat was popular because in the mid 1920's there were three years where wheat had a good year. This caused the prices to go up and up and up.

However, wheat was being over produced and in 1929, there was still wheat that had not been sold. And then the prices dropped and so did the market leaving people who had invested in the market either in debt (because they had bought on credit and could not pay their debt back) or had lost all or most of their fortunes.

A markit anylist rites: The Stock Market is a giant gambling casino but the bets are called 'Investments'.

People with money who like to gamble but not lose, buy stock (A share) in a company and when that company makes money the stockholder is paid a dividend from the profits. When the company does badly, the stockholder sells his share and looks for another company that is doing well. When a stockholder can't find a company that is doing well, he will buy gold. Companies then have no money invested in them, can't operate properly and the whole market (Casino) goes to Hell.

It was a combination of many things especially terrible policies by the Federal Reserve Bank which deliberately contracted the money supply at exactly the wrong time. That forced banks to call in loans

Everyone thought they could get rich by giving other people their money to invest / hold.

Still today we are at risk of our biggest financial institutions collapsing, but they tend to refer to the inevitable downfall a "facade".
