Can a temporiley manager hire and fire people while our manager is on maternity leave?

Update:

My mum has being doing care work for 11yrs and she's worked in this care home for 6yrs.....My mother has had no problem until this month..

Our manager is on maternity leave and before she left she hired a temp manager until she comes back from having her baby. The thing is this temp manager has been here less than a month and she's being doing ALOT of hiring and firing....There's only a few of the ones who've been there for a long time....oh and some of the new ones when they''ve just started the job they've quit cuz they canny handle it.

The thing is she sacked my mother, a nurse and another carer for nothing.

Can this temp manager do this?

Everybody is saying sooner our manager is back the better,

Yes. If your manager is out, the temp manager has the power to do whatever the real manager does/did. They may be required to get permission from the real manager first, but they can fire if need be.

That would be up to your employer. The employer can certainly give that power to a temp manager.

Yes. Provided they follow correct procedure and comply with employment law.

I doubt it - who is the boss of the temp Mgr?

No law prevents them from firing people.
