That is normal. Tampons make your period much easier than wearing pads all the time. But if you are going to use them frequently make sure you read about them so you use them right. Avoid using them if you are not bleeding much that day. Don't wear them for more than 6-7 hours and never wear them to bed overnight.
I will tell you that it will get easier to deal with eventually, you just get used to it. You will always feel a little gross, sad, and uncomfortable during the month while you have your period - no avoiding that. But you get better at handling it.
Some advice is to keep very clean while on your period. Shower daily and put on clean pads or tampons as often as necessary. If you feel comfortable with it, you can trim some of your pubic hair with scissors - as it prevents blood from sticking and drying in the hair. It will help you feel cleaner and less gross.
If you can, you should wear comfortable and dark coloured clothing. Something like track pants will help you feel more comfortable even if you are getting cramps or wearing a pad. If your clothing is dark coloured you won't be as worried about blood leaking through onto your clothing (which can happen, we've all dealt with it)
Keep some extra pads and tampons in your backpack or purse. If your period catches you by surprise you will be prepared for it. (Since it's your first one, it might be a little irregular for a while. You may not get it every month)
Also sometimes you can get cramps and other discomfort - pills like tylenol, advil, or midol can help with things like that. It can be good to keep those around for if you need it.
I feel silly to say "congrats" for your first period. It's not really fun, but you'll get the hang of it. Feel free to email me from my profile if you have any questions or want to talk about it. I've had my period for over 10 years so I've picked up a lot of tricks and ways to be comfortable with it. Good luck with everything :)

Not that's not bad at all haha >>>Pads are gross! Talk to some of your friends or female adults about it if you have questions, trust me, they can help a lot. It might seem embarrassing but just remember that it's a fact of life that all girls have. Good luck!:)
