Could someone please explain what the beginning of Prometheus was about?

    the beginning is intended to show how life started on Earth. the alien swallowed the pill (or whatever that thing was) and disintegrated into DNA fragments, which separated and recombined to form the first building blocks of life.

    why they did it and why he was chosen to be sacrificed is left up for debate.
