How much would it cost to change the swing of a front door to a house?

I have a very old door on a very old house, the door is one of those metal ones and I'd very much like to keep it.

The entire doorway probably needs to be reconstructed due to age anyway.

I neither have the tools, strength, or patience to take on the project myself. Since the decision isn't entirely up to me, I'm trying to get a rough estimate of the cost before I share my intentions (meaning I can't really have anyone come inspect it first...)

A new screen door is currently needed as well, so I was wondering if now would be time time to replace the entire get up, and if doing both projects together would cut the cost some...

you will not get a good answer on the internet. Changing the swing on a exterior metal door is basically not possible in most cases.

Without a professional looking at it and assessing it all bets are off.

Hanging a door and reconstructing a doorway are essentially two different projects.though related. If you want to reconstruct the doorway this is a good time to do so

Whatever reason you have for not disclosing this to the other person in the house needs to be fixed first before you start your project.

Call some carpenters or handymen that do that type of work and get at least three estimates then you will have a more exact idea of the cost. Itsounds like you would probably want to get a new door and frame. You might want to take a measurement of the door size and then go down to a door company or someplace like Home Depot. Then you can look at replacement doors and their cost. Also look at cost of replacement screen door. Itwould definitely be easier to do everything at once since the screen has to be removed before replacing main door.

Home Depot told me installation of one of their doors was the same price as the price of the door. Too much! I called for estimates and got a great deal from a very good professional. I think he charged $200 per door to install, I paid him $400 for 2 doors. As far as the swing...I changed only the swing on one screen door. Sorry I did. Look at your door and the swing and figure why its that way and not the other way. The builders know what they're doing. My reasoning was right, but it makes it difficult to unlock the inner door. The inner door wouldn't be right if I changed the swing.

Changing the swing involves removing the door and cutting/chiseling new hinge pockets on the door and frame and a new latch pocket on the opposite side door frame, removing and reversing the door knobs/latch and covering up or filling the old hinge /latch pockets...restain or paint old areas as needed...installing and adjusting the door as needed to open /close properly...reverse any door sweeps or weather stripping. Might be several hours of work although a metal door may not allow for reversing or a lot of extra work if the hinge pockets are built in and screw holes are pretapped. Check the hinge areas to see if they surface mount to the door or are recessed into the door. Screen/storm doors run around 1-2 hours of work to install depending on whether the door opening is a standard size or needs trimming....common standard width sizes are 30", 32", 34" or 36" although 30" + 34" are more rare and harder to match..... door heights are usually around 80" and most storms have an adjustable lower panel to allow for slight variations in height. The width is more important since an opening that is not a common standard size requires a lot of extra labor to add tack strips or cut notches into the old frame.

Measure the existing doors and opening for width and height....call some local handymen or carpentry contractors and get some quotes on labor rates and possibly have them inspect the doors/door frame for any issues that might come up....Craigslist.com or other sites like Angieslist.com , Homeadvisor.com, etc.. usually are a good option but check for good references. All told, it might run 7-10 hours of labor and depending on local labor rates anywhere from 20-80.00+ per hour for labor plus the cost of the new storm door..might run 80-250.00 depending on style.

Anywhere from 100 dollars to over 1000.

    Not counting the door.
