how to calculate percent of something on sale PLEASE HELP?

so i work in retail (first retail job ever) and at it we have a basket for 75% off items i always dredd when someone comes to my register with items from that basket

how i do percent is

original price x 75% - original price = sale price

but this only works if something is a solid number like $7.00 or $7.50 if i try this with a item marked $5.05 i get a weird decimal number back is there a easier way to find out the percent off i would really appreciate it

75% off is taking 3/4 off the original price. If the original price is $4.00 divide that by 4 (and you get $1.00) and that is 1/4. three of those would be 3/4 or $3.00.

But lets say you have something that is originally $44.65. When you divide THAT by 4 you get one of your weird numbers. $11.16 with one left over. In this case, use the rule of 5's. the left over number is less than 5 so discard it. Multiply the 11.16 by three and that is the amount of your discount. If it were over 5 you would make the 11.16 - 11.17 and multiply that by three to get your discount.

There is an easier way to do this. Percentages are covered in 7th grade math. you can go to your community college and take a refresher course, because, if you cannot do basic...and 75% is as basic as you can get...percentage discounts...you will never make more than minimum wage in your life unless a relative gets rich and takes pity on you.

But you get points for trying, you really do!

if you want to know what the price will be when the discount is applied, if the discount is 20%, the price of the item is $75, then multiply 75 x 80, this will be the discounted price

    long way to do it

75 x 20%, and subtract that answer from the $75

Multiply the original price by 25%. When you get a cost with a weird decimal number, round up to the nearest cent if the number is 0.5 or more, if less than 0.5, ignore the remainder.

Take a business math course at your local community college.
