Tattoo aftercare?

I got my first tattoo on Saturday (2 days ago) on my right side. It's a fairly big tattoo. Practically takes up my whole side. I've been treating it how the artist told me to; washing it three times a day with antibacterial bar soap and applying Aquaphore on it immediately after. I've been wearing baggy shirts so I don't irritate it and sleeping on my left side and back. I just have a few questions.

How many more days should I continue to wash it 3 times a day?

When can I start to let the shower stream hit it directly?

When should I start using unscented lotion instead of the aquaphore?

The artist didn't give me any written down instructions and he kind of assumed I would know what to do since my brother was with me and he's had a full sleeve done, but he wasn't very specific.

Thanks!

You should wash it 3 times a day and applying aquaphor until it is fully healed. A large piece can take up to a month or more to heal, but 2 - 3 weeks is usually how long it takes for an average sized one to heal. You can let the shower water and steam hit it directly as soon as it is confortable for you just don't stay in the shower too long. I would use the aquaphor the entire healing time, but if your artists wants you to start using unscented lotion start about 5 - 7 days after initially getting tattooed.

Okay, I bet it looks totally adorable! Anyways, wash frequently. If you wear tight shirt, stick with baggy tees for a couple weeks. If you want to keep it covered it might be a little awkward, but plastic wrap. Almost every parlor uses this. I've never seen anyone use aquaphore successfully, but go for it if you want. DO NOT use Vaseline. It can irritate, and scar the tat. I suggest cream(aquaphore/any other) recommended by your artist. I personally suggest A+D. It's a classic. And it WORKS! If shampoo goes over it, it will be fine. Shower with luke warm water. Good Luck! Hope it get better quick!

keep washing it 3 times daily, and using the aquaphore until its pretty much healed

then you can switch to unscented lotion to keep it supple

do you have a power shower? if you do dont let it hit directly if you can avoid it till its healed

if its not terribly powerful you are ok to let it rinse it off

you need to more careful of letting showergel/champoo wash over your tattoo than you do about the water hitting it directly
